Grease Star To Walk Great Wall for Charity
June 2008

Olivia NewtonJohn will walk along the Great Wall of China starting on April 7 to raise money for a cancer charity. The full distance is 228 kilometers (141 miles) and the walk is expected to take 21 days and be completed in Beijing.

The star lived through breast cancer in the 1990s. She is donating her proceeds to a cancer research facility in Melbourne, Australia, her hometown. Newton-John scored seven Top 10 country hits in the 1970s and was named the CMA female vocalist of the year in 1974

The Great Wall of China is one of the world's true wonders. Measuring over 1500 miles long the wall is not continuous but is made up of short sections over the hills and valleys close to the Mongolian plains.

The Mongol nomads were the people that designed the first set of walls during the Qin Dynasty between 221 - 206 BCE.

The modern wall's beginnings date back to the Ming Dynasty 1388 to 1644 CE. At regular intervals along the walls watch towers were established.

Despite many rumours you cannot see the Great Wall from the moon.

BEIJING, Jan 08 (Xinhua) -- The State Administration of Cultural Heritage (SACH) is organizing a large-scale investigation into the length of the Great Wall, said a cultural heritage official on Monday.

"The thorough investigation will be completed in two or three years. We will use remote sensing, aviation and information technology. According to Chinese astronauts anyway.

More human destruction threatens the Great Wall

Old age is hitting the Great Wall bad these days. If its not tourists attacking the wall and stealing parts for treasure then it is locals stealing parts of the wall for building materials.

The Great Wall not only has to deal with humans but also from years of bad weather, wind and ravaging rain.

There has been reports in the mmedia that about 1/3 of the 100 mile stretch in Northwest China's Ningxia Hui Region, also known to many as China's Museum of the Great Wall, has disappeared.

This section of the wall dates back to the Warring States Period (that is 475-221 BC) and the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).

There is a big effort being made now to keep and eye on the wall and to stop local residents taking away the clay stones.

The biggest threat to the Great Wall?

> 10 November 2006

Tourists with knives are fast becoming the great threat to the GreatWall. It has been a trend for years to carve one's name into the wall in the name of graffiti. Taking a knife to this World Heritage site should not be acceptable. You do not see (modern day) graffiti on other World Heritage sites such as StoneHenge in England.

Deputy Chairman of the Great Wall Association, Mr Dong Yaohui is clearly upset about the latest attacks from tourists and the fact that barely a stone has escaped the graffiti. Dong Yaohui went on to say that he felt terribly ashamed of his fellow Chinese who had carved on the bricks with knives.

There has even been reports of tourists with paint brushes ruining sections of the wall with mindless graffiti.

In Beijing, the municipal government in August 2003 introduced a local law to help protect the wall.

The law states that all local government bodies along the Great Wall, as well as all tourists, are obliged to look after the wall for the generations of visitors to come.

Why walk the Great Wall when you can catch the cable car?

> 29th October 2006

I guess things have to move on and progress but a cable car at the Great Wall? Really? They'll be building a Starbucks soon (see below)!

So now you can simply take your air conditioned coach all the way from Beijing to the Great Wall and be escorted straight to your cable car for your Great Wall 'walking' experience.

It may take you a while to hunt down your 'I've walked the Great Wall' t-shirt (particularly if you want one that fits) but now your feet can rest in the knowledge that the only exertion will be running away from the touts.

The Great Wall kept out whole civilisations - but can't stop corporate America

> 26th September 2006

Starbucks has breached the Great Wall of China. Millions have tried and failed but not the global coffee giant.

The Badaling section, also the most touristed section of the Great Wall has seen it's first coffee shop. This is all very ironic in the land of tea.

Consumer demand and free market forces have plotted this breach of the world's most famous wall.
